The 2009 Patuxent High School

Marching Band presents:

1492: Mundus Novus

Patuxent High School is proud to present its 2009 production 1492: Mundus Novus, a show in five movements, depicting Christopher Columbus' epic journey to the new land.

As the voyage begins in movement one, “Preparation of the Caravels in Palos”, we hear a solo trumpet and horn notifying the citizens of the journey about to take place.  As the movement continues, we hear and see the excitement building among all of those involved until finally they come forward to say goodbye to a new hero.

Movement two, "The Endless Seas," portrays the trials and tribulations faced from the beginning of the voyage.  The ever-changing winds and currents cause the crew to adjust sails and make repairs to the ship early in the expedition.  Just as calm appears to be setting in, the crew is once again forced to work against the elements.

As the expedition continues, movement three, "Fear As Night Falls" gives us a glimpse into the trepidation faced by all as darkness takes over.  The crew finds comfort in one another as the waves continue to toss around the ship.  After many sleepless nights, singing can be heard from the crew one morning as the sun rises and Mundus Novus, the new land, appears on the horizon.

Movement four, "Cultures Collide" is a percussion feature portraying the differences Columbus witnessed between his culture and the lives of the indigenous people of the new land.  With the sounds of tribal drumming, the new comers realize that they are not the first to set foot on this ground.

Finally departing from his newly discovered land, Columbus begins his journey back to Spain.  Movement five, "Stormy Seas/Return to Europe" portrays the dangerous voyage ahead.    After months of harsh storms, treacherous winds, and damaged ships, the crew returns home.  A triumphant recurring melody is heard throughout the movement signifying the undoubted success of Christopher Columbus in his discovery of the new land.
